Oralie Girard has made a business out of knowing when to accept the opportunities that arise for her. Girard started her business, Old Tyme Spa and Flame, 13 years ago as a home-based venture, working evenings and weekends as time permitted. She and her husband had originally imagined a business in which they would help potential home builders negotiate the choppy waters of building a houseófrom choosing a mortgage broker to a design firm and contractoróbut quickly discovered their interests were even more defined. After installing a fireplace in their home from a certain supplier, the couple were approached by the company to consider being the regional outlet for the line. One thing led to another, and high-quality hot tubs were soon added to their merchandise and Old Tyme Spa and Flame took off.
“I really love the business,” said Girard, who is now the sole owner of the company. “I am driven, and I’m one of those people who put their heart and soul into it.”
Girard believes her commitment to value and honesty are the secrets to success. She’s been able to win the hearts of many customers by being honest and providing important information long before supplying them with merchandise.
“I’ve been told, ‘You’re the go-to girl,’ ” she said. “I’m not here to say, ‘Oh, you need everything off the shelf’…When people understand their situation when it’s been explained to them, they become loyal and they trust you.”
