Press Release KHMR Master Development Agreement

{bizblog_img_alt_text} After the lighting of the Olympic Torch in the town of Golden, British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell attended a ceremony at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort where he also announced the approval of the New Master Plan for the resort. “At the Provincial level we have now approved Kicking Horse’s Master Plan,” stated Premier Campbell as he addressed the crowd at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort during the Run of the Fire Torchlight Parade held as part of the Olympic Torch celebrations in Golden. “It opens up enormous opportunities; an opportunity to build tourism, to build this resort and to let it take the next step forward,” continued Campbell.

The newly approved Master Plan which spans a 40-year period calls for a world class, destination mountain resort with an expanded controlled recreation area, 20,000 bed units, an 18-hole signature golf course, a multi-use trail system with 11 proposed lifts and 4,188 acres of skiable terrain. The plan is a major milestone for the resort and the final step in the process under the Commercial Alpine Ski Policy will be the signing of the master development agreement.

“This is an exciting time for Golden, Kicking Horse Country and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort” says Steve Paccagnan, President and CEO of Kicking Horse Mountain. “Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has the natural assets to be one of the finest mountain resorts in North America. With the news from the Premier, we are excited to enter our next decade continuing to be a major economic contributor to our community and playing a key role in supporting the province`s goal of doubling tourism by 2015.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (KHMR) is one of the first new resort projects built in Canada in the past 25-years. Since inception in December 2000, KHMR has invested over $100M and has stimulated an additional $100M of investment from third party developers totaling of over $200M invested in the local economy to date.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has enjoyed steady growth since inception supported by the evolution of the entire region due to the effort and cooperation of all levels of government. This evolution includes the significant Trans Canada highway improvement project in the Kicking Horse Canyon, the Town of Golden’s Official Community Plan, and now the provincial approval of the new Master Plan for Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

Kimberley Happy Hans Famed Cuckoo Clock Needs Help

{bizblog_img_alt_text}

Did you know that our favorite Kimberley attraction is over 37 years old? Canada’s largest cuckoo clock was built in September 1972 by Bill Spence and was designed by Dick Bova. In true down-home Kimberley Spirit, its inner workings were constructed from various “found objects” and recycled parts. On-the-hour or for a quarter, Happy Hans has entertained us with Adi Unterberger’s distinctive “Glacier Yodel”, but lately Happy has been in an early retirement mode. In spite of the countless volunteer hours invested by Juri Adank and others to get him operating, Happy is showing his age! The Kimberley Chamber has just struck a committee to get Happy back on his feet and breathe new life into our old friend. Your participation is invited! We will need an industrial designer and/or engineer to design the inner workings. We will need machinists, electricians and possibly a millwright to build it. We will need craftsmen to redesign and update the exterior and most of all, we will need funds to make it happen.

If you wish to become involved or can contribute in any way please contact Kimberley Chamber at 250-427-3666

Cranbrook Arches Erected As Project Near Completion

{bizblog_img_alt_text}

The new soon-to-be Cranbrook arches

What’s old is new again. The famed Cranbrook arches which were originally built in 1934 at the entrance to the City of Cranbrook have been reconstructed and installed at the 9th Avenue connector heading into downtown Cranbrook.

The project was spearheaded by president Cranbrook Downtown Business Association and the Arches Committee chairman Fred Hoeschsmann. Over $600,000 in donations and in-kind services have already gone into the project and another $150,000 in required to fully complete the project.

Though the arches themselves are up there are still a number of things to do to finish the project up including lighting, landscaping and new sidewalks.

Now visitors and residents alike will unquestionably know that they have arrived in Cranbrook when they are welcomed by the new Cranbrook arches which are a throw back to the old Cranbrook arches…an old landmark now reconstructed and destined to become a new landmark for the City.
