Fernie celebrates Ski Heritage Week

{photo_caption}

If you are a keen skier, passionate about skiing and or just want to hear perspectives from some of Canada’s top ski media, you will want to take part in a session called "What will the next 50 years bring for the sport of skiing and current ski trends?" led by Iain Macmillan—editor of Ski Canada Magazine; mountain sport writing legend, Whistler local and editor emiterius of Skiing Magazine, Mike Berard; and the very talented Krista Turcasso, who can not only rip on skis but is a top mountain biker and founder of local success story, the Fernie Fix.

This is sure to be a lively session as each one of them will have a dynamic and different perspective. Next up is Al Raine, mayor of Sun Peaks resort municipality, who will share his wealth of knowledge and expertise on the "History of Ski Development in BC and the Future of Mountain Living Towns." Ending Ski Heritage Week will be a spirited session by Sheldon Decosse, Decosse Custom Skis, and Mitchell Scott, publisher, Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine, called "Building Brands for the Future."

If all of this is not enough, during Ski Heritage Week, the celebration of 50 years of skiing is taken from the mountain to main street, as everyone in the community of Fernie celebrates the "Powderful tradition of Skiing, People and Passion" in this mountain town cradled by the Rocky Mountains.

The endless fun continues with a community street party with a live band on Mainstreet, BC Telemark Association Race Weekend, Ski Instructors Reunion (a la the movie Hot Tub Time Machine), torchlight ski run, fireworks and ends with the Griz Bar Heritage Ski Party (famous for keeping Rippers Ripped).  And if this still is not enough . . . snow and more snow keeps on falling in Fernie, close to 40 centimetres of fresh powder fell in 24 hours and more than 100 centimetres new this week. Fernie, home of the legendary powder, continues to have some of the deepest snow in North America and the most snow in the Canadian Rockies; now that is powderful history!

Chamber luncheon featuring an interview with GM and head coach of Kootenay Ice

A partnership between Kootenay Business magazine, the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce and College of the Rockies, the East Kootenay’s largest Career and Job Fair gives employers and potential employees a chance to network, investigate career opportunities and perhaps find employment in the Summer Job Alley. Employers will be accepting resumes and actively recruiting for employees during the event.

The Career and Job Fair runs from 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, with the chamber of commerce luncheon starting at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon is for chamber of commerce preregistered members only. The keynote presentation will be an in-depth interview conducted by Kootenay Business magazine publisher Keith Powell with Kootenay Ice president and general manager, Jeff Chynoweth and head coach, Kris Knoblauch on the theme: The Secret of Creating a Winning Attitude and Legacy.

With a full slate of six dynamic speakers and over 15 exhibitors, the annual event promises to offer health tips for all.

The 5th Annual Rocky Mountain Health, Wellness and Active Adult Living Expo will be held Saturday, January 28th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Prestige Inn in Cranbrook.  And best of all admission is absolutely free.

Again this year at the Wellness Expo is the senior showcase designed to encourage and promote active adult living. A number of exhibitors will be displaying services and products especially designed for active adults and retirees.

“This theme is especially appropriate as our Kootenay population ages. Our exhibitors are there to offer helpful suggestions so we can all stay healthy and active,” said Maureen Gordon, a representative of Kootenay Business, and an organizer of the event.

The 2012 Health, Wellness and Active Adult Living Expo will focus on active, healthy living.  For example, you won’t want to miss the inspiring and interactive presentation by CanFitPro Certified Personal Trainers John and Debbie Mandryk at 11:30 to 12 noon.

The Mandryks specialize in working with older adults. Both have a competitive sport background. Their focus is on healthy aging and developing fun programs to promote functionality. As well as working with clients on strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and balance, they explore other factors that influence our state of health and wellness, including nutrition and positive social relationships.

Join Debbie and John for an enjoyable interactive discussion about the components of health aging.

Also in attendance and speaking at the event will be Adele Engel of Panorama. She is the owner of Evolution Wellness in Panorama and the developer of the internationally acclaimed Essential Nutrition Mix.

As a holistic health and wellness coach Adele has much to share with those looking to feel and look better.

The Expo offers attendees a valuable opportunity to meet face-to-face with many health and wellness experts. These professional are ready to assist people to reach their wellness goals in 2012.

Make sure to start 2012 out on the right foot by talking one-to-one with over 15 wellness exhibitors who will be on hand to answer your questions. They will provide you with suggestions to ensure that your personal well-being and active lifestyle choices are achievable.
