Building a successful business New Dawn’s reputation is based on its quality and capability by WHITNEY BLACK

A solid reputation is something most businesses look to build as they work their way from the ground up. In the case of New Dawn Developments, building things from the ground up is what has won the company its reputation.
The Cranbrook-based construction and land development company has been operating since 1978 and its services are in high demand throughout the Kootenay region. The family-run business has been, and still is, involved in many of the large developments going on all over the Kootenays.
Growing up in the biz
“I worked with my parents all through school and came on full time in 1996 when I finished my bachelor of commerce,” said Chad Jensen, president of New Dawn Developments. “I have basically been running the company ever since.
“Mom and dad originally moved here from Thompson, Manitoba. They had visited here a couple of times and loved the mountains, loved the scenery and everything else.”
Kimberley—dreams and spirit
Two major developments happening in Kimberley, DreamCatcher Chalets and the Mountain Spirit Resort and Spa, are among the projects that New Dawn Developments is involved with.
DreamCatcher Chalets is a 90-cabin, duplex, triplex and quadplex project at Kimberley Alpine Resort being developed by the Keenan Development Group; New Dawn is the primary builder on the site.
“We first met Bill Keenan in Fernie in 2000,” said Jensen. “We were doing a condo project there and he was looking to do one in Fernie and liked what we were doing. We started talking and the dialogue has stayed open over the years. He finally came to Kimberley and we had been with him for so long that we were just part of the team from the beginning.”
The DreamCatcher Chalets project is currently selling Phase 2 lots.
As the Keenan Development Group is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, New Dawn Developments’ ability to provide in-house design and drafting is critical.
“With the remote developers, it’s better for them to have a solid contractor with all the services, so they don’t have to do as much from where they live,” Jensen said.
New Dawn has been involved with the Mountain Spirit Resort and Spa for over two years now. The resort has gone through a number of investors and several setbacks in the past, but is now back on track. Through all the setbacks, New Dawn Developments has been part of the team.
“We were just logically the team member for that because we had been involved for so long and they were comfortable with us and knew what our capacity was,” said Jensen.
Mountain Spirit Resort and Spa, situated at the base of the ski hill at Kimberley Alpine Resort, gives people the opportunity to purchase their own luxury condo away from the worries of the everyday world.
In addition to these projects, New Dawn Developments is also working on the Northstar Mountain Village, the cottages at Forest Crowne and Willow Vistas—all in Kimberley.
In Cranbrook, the company is involved with several projects, including Orchard Park Estates, Southview Drive, and the new Wildstone development by Havaday Developments.
“A lot of it is our reputation and our capacity to do the amount of work that we can,” Jensen said. “It sets us apart from some of the other builders.”
