Cranbrook Countdown to the BC winter Games The Kootenay Communities of Kimberley and Cranbrook prepare to host B.C.’s best athletes in 2008 by TANYA LAING MOORE

Rob McIntyre, president of the Kimberley/Cranbrook 2008 BC Winter Games, is confident that the organizing committee for the Games is coming together in a timely fashion.
“The first level and the second level are pretty well in place,” said McIntyre. “The first level is the 14 directors plus the vice-president, Allan Davis. Then, each director has as many as six key chairs under them, and we have most of those in place—which takes us up to 80 to 90 people. These chairs will have committee members under them.
“The Games (are made up of) roughly a hundred subcommittees. It’s a huge organizational structure.”
Keeping that many people motivated can be massive undertaking on its own, but McIntyre is equal to the task.
“I think the event itself is fabulous, and there is a sense that it is one of the better events to be involved with,” said McIntyre. “It’s quite an undertaking, but it’s quite an accomplishment. There are people who like that kind of challenge and rise to it. You do your best to lead by example and say thank you a lot.
“Somebody said it’s a room full of A-types,” he added with a laugh.
The core committee has been together since July, and McIntyre believes that they have come together with an invested spirit.
McIntyre brings years of committee experience to the table, having been involved as operations manager with the Kimberley Winter Games in 1980. He’s also been a city alderman and a school principal, as well as on different boards.
“This is a culmination of all the things I’ve learned over the years, and it’s nice to put them all into one event,” he said.
The decision to apply for hosting the Games as a joint venture was one suggested by the BC Winter Games Association. Kimberley and Cranbrook had each individually applied for the distinction of being the host community with no success, but a proposal of partnership between the cities was readily accepted. The decision about which city would be listed first in billing was settled the old-fashioned way.
“We flipped a coin,” said McIntyre.
The partnership is one of the best things for the region, McIntyre believes.
“We’ve always sort of been friendly rivals, so to work together on a project this large is really exciting,” he said.
“It’s going to expose us to some great athletes,” McIntyre added, speaking of the other benefits of hosting the Games. “Also, there’s the economic spinoff that they predict is about $1.2 million of direct spending that happens as a result of the event. There’s also the whole excitement of having an event of this focus for our community—it’s like a little mini Olympics.”
McIntyre added that it may draw people to live and work in the area as well.
Promotions for the Games have already begun, with the board of directors for the 2008 BC Winter Games challenging the city councils of Kimberley and Cranbrook to games of road hockey, to the great delight of the public.
Fernie, too, will likely have the chance to see some benefits from the Games, as it has been announced that the figure skating events are expected to occur in Fernie.
The BC Winter Games will take place February 21 to 24. McIntyre predicted that 2,500 athletes, coaches, dignitaries and athletic personnel will attend the Games, and almost an equal number of volunteers will be required for the event. Those wishing to be part of the Games can contact either the Kimberley or Cranbrook chamber of commerce, or visit www.bcgames.org.
