Cranbrook Enjoy the view Shirley Organ shares her vision at Shadow Mountain by TANYA LAING MOORE

Shirley Organ and her partner, Gary Barrett, spent several years choosing the exact orientation of their future house situated along the St. Mary River on the site of what is now the Shadow Mountain development in Cranbrook.
“We’ve been out on the property 16 years and lived in a trailer,” said Organ. “For five years, we sat in lawn chairs in different places on the property. And right where we are is where we needed to build. Our whole front (of the house) is windows, so it’s like you’re stepping right out into the windows. It’s like I have a live painting.”
Organ and Barrett’s property has been home to several dogs—they raise and breed Japanese akitas—as well as a number of the relocated Suffield mustangs, a passion for Organ. She and Barrett met 17 years ago after she and her children and ex-husband moved west fromSaskatchewan. Although she spent most of her life living on the prairies, she is now a mountain girl at heart.
“I missed (the prairies) the first year,” said Organ. “I found that I couldn’t see anything; everywhere I looked, I was blocked. But after we came back from holidays it was always the same: we’re home. After the first year, it was home for everybody.”
Organ and Barrett are committed to responsible development of the property that has been their home for so many years and they want to maintain the integrity and natural beauty of the landscape.
“We’ve literally walked every mile of (the property) for a year and tied ribbons on the trees,” said Organ. “Those ribbons mean, ‘Do not touch this tree; it is not going anywhere.’ ”
Protecting some of the unique features of the mountainous terrain has even meant redefining lot lines or plotting new routes for the golf cart paths that will be built, but it was an easy choice as far as Organ is concerned.
“Gary and I live here,” she said. “This has been in his family since the ’50s, so it’s very personal. And we’re so lucky that that’s how our partners feel about it. It’s all part of the landscape and we’re going to keep it as natural as possible.”
