A boost to health care programs
Interior Health makes a donation to the College of the Rockies

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT: College of the Rockies dean of instruction Gary Johnson (left) and Cranbrook/Kimberley Health Services administrator Paul Vieira inspect the new nursing ward of Summit Hall to which Interior Health donated hospital beds and nighttables.
Thirty hospital beds and nightstands, which were part of a surplus from the former Steepleview Care Centre in Cranbrook, were recently donated by the Interior Health Authority to the College of the Rockies.

Eighteen of the beds and tables are now located in the nursing ward of Summit Hall, the newly-completed academic building, with the remaining 12 beds being used to upgrade the existing lab in Kootenay Centre (the main building at the Cranbrook campus).

The equipment will be used by students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing and Resident Care/Home Support Attendant programs, which all start in September.

Cranbrook/Kimberley Health Services administrator Paul Vieira commented: “Interior Health is committed to the education of future health care professionals and proud of its partnership with the College of the Rockies. The donation of these beds and nightstands will allow nursing students a quality hands-on approach to their studies.”

Added dean of instruction Gary Johnson: “This donation is so timely. Previously all three programs were using one lab with only 12 beds for practical instruction and this resulted in a less than perfect situation. We are very grateful to Interior Health for this equipment at a time when an expansion is taking place.”

Johnson continued: “College of the Rockies students in the health programs are fortunate to be able to perform their work experience at the hospitals and other health care facilities in the East Kootenay under an agreement with the Interior Health Authority. We also partnered with them, and other agencies, in the emergency preparedness exercise last February when they used our health wing as an isolation ward in a pandemic preparedness exercise. We look forward to continued co-operation with Interior Health to our mutual benefit."
