Does your college kid need a summer job—or does your teenager want information about career choices? The place to go on Wednesday, April 14 is the Business, Education and Career Expo at the College of the Rockies (COTR), held in partnership with the Cranbrook & District Chamber of Commerce. h3. Hit Summer Job Alley College and university students will find a wealth of potential employers that are participating in the subsidized Hire-a-Student program at the COTR event. Businesses from the tourism, retail and hospitality industries will be eager to meet students seeking short-term employment—especially those who come prepared to make an impression. h3. Get a bearing on the future With representatives from several post-secondary institutions and from major employers like Teck Coal, BDO Canada, Certified General Accountants and the Association of B.C. Land Surveyors in attendance, young people will find the expo a great resource for planning. “I think that it’s a great benefit for (young people),” said Hugh Moore, career and placement officer at COTR. “Our college students (who are already in a program) can meet up with potential employers in their fields. Those who are in general studies and anyone who isn’t quite sure about what they want to do can get some ideas.” Young people can also meet students who are currently enrolled in COTR programs, for helpful feedback and direction. h3. Make the most of opportunity Treat the Business, Education and Career Expo as a competitive job interview. This event is a rare chance to get automatic face-to-face time with those who can empower your career path. Here are some tips for standing out from the crowd: • Dress appropriately—polished and professional is best. • Have your resumé on hand. • Research the employers you wish to approach. Find a company that fits with you. At the very least—Google them. • Have an intelligent answer to “Why do you want to work for us?” • Hone in on your targets. Let them know why you picked them. Candidates who did research are memorable. • Make an impression. Make eye contact, give a firm handshake—and show what you know about their company. • Follow up—call back and say thank you. You will be remembered. h3.
