Fernie's Top 40 Under 40

31. Jodie Parker
I’m a life long Fernieite and enjoy giving back to this community whenever possible.

Running Mug Shots Bistro with my parents allows me this opportunity, and the ability to be directly involved with the locals and visitors. Working with Community Futures also allows me to assist others in starting their own business. Volunteering with Canadian Red Cross teaching relationship violence prevention and child abuse prevention programs in the schools has been a great opportunity. I love working with children and youth.

At last years Relay for Life for the Cancer Society, Jodie and five other women shaved their heads and raised almost $14,000. She feels passionate about giving to those who are in need.

32. Amanda Ridgeway

Born and raised in rural Queensland, Australia, I was attracted to Fernie for the
community and skiing and was smart enough to stay! Fortunate to score a great job working at the Women’s Centre, I’ve been presented with awesome opportunities to contribute to the community such as working on the OCP Implementation Committee and projects like Attainable Housing. I am lucky to have found the man, friends and place that, after wandering across the globe, have convinced this nomad to finally settle down.

What gets me up in the morning? Contributing to the world I live in and/or the blast of the train whistle.

33. Carmen Schorn

I have offered my services for many weddings in Fernie and my shop for local events
such as the "Evening of Elegance" and fundraisers for Relay for Life. I provide catering
for many community events and local parties and have offered gift certificates for local charities to raise money. People say my greatest contribution to the community is my chocolate chip banana bread.

What gets me up in the morning? My baking; the alarm clock helps too.

34. Chantel Souliere

I’m a true Kootenay girl, born in Cranbrook, and came to Fernie three years ago after working in Calgary, where I was Producer with the Ride Guide, traveling B.C.’s backcountry with a camera on my shoulder and a snowboard on my feet, living like a rock star. Arriving in Fernie, I became a TV reporter for Shaw Cable and co-ordinated the
Elk Valley Relay For Life, making it one of the most successful in BC raising $74,000. Currently I am working on my own small business start-up!

What gets me up in the morning? I get up and work hard so I can play hard.
35. Kieran Summers

Through Giver Shirt Works, I have worked hard to build a local business that provides
quality service to my customers throughout the Elk Valley, and beyond. Along the way, I’ve met many amazing people, including some of the organizers of the Ghostrider
Adventure Camp. For the past two years, we have been pleased to donate our printing
services for the camp, and are looking forward to helping out again this year. We are proud to be a locally owned and operated business, and would like to thank the people of the Elk Valley for their continued support.

What gets me up in the morning? The excitement of another day, full of unknown
challenges and triumphs. Thirty centimetres of fresh doesn’t hurt either!
36. Krista Turcasso

In 1997 I left for university and thought I would never look back. I initially reserved visits home for holidays, but inevitably these visits increased to every opportune occasion until finally moving back in 2005. Shortly after, my business partner, Vanessa, and I began the Fernie Fix. Publishing this magazine is a gift. It allows me to discover something new each and every day, solidifying my passion for Fernie and hopefully passing it on. While Fernie grows and changes, I plan on being involved to ensure its essence remains. Volunteering with a variety of organizations within Fernie has allowed
me to work towards this goal and to be an active member of this community.

What gets me up in the morning? It changes every day…lately, the construction next door.

37. Keya White

I feel fortunate to have called Fernie home since 1994, when my family and I moved here from B.C.’s Sunshine Coast. Ever since, I’ve enjoyed participating in a number of local groups and initiatives including Wildsight, Bear Aware, the Elk Valley Stewardship Centre, the Banner Project and the Official Community Plan Steering Committee. A member of Advocates for Local Living since its inception, I recently helped put together Fernie’s Think Local First Community Coupon Book. I also display my artwork, painting and photography, and volunteer my time at the Fernie Arts Co-op.

What gets me up in the morning? The great feeling that I have the opportunity to realize my dreams here and that there is no time like the present to do that.

38. Ashley Williams
I try to do a lot with the children in the community, hopefully helping them to love
playing and learning. Through managing the kids ski school and summer camps, I get to spend a lot of time with this growing population sector of Fernie! I also coordinate the children’s sports programs, work with the region's kids with special needs, offering hiking, outdoor skill training and nature lessons, and offer a free program to the community on how to teach skiing (Jr. Instructors Program).

39. Summer Wilson

Working with the Elk Valley hospital foundation I volunteer my time and work hard to go throughout the community requesting for donations for events. I donate time,
procedures, sessions, and liniments to various community events. I have spent many man hours decorating for the Hospital Gala. We have organized Marshals Fun Run with Fernie Sports to raise money for the Elk Valley Hospital Foundation. I really enjoy helping people in the community with their health and hope to do so for a long time.

What gets me up in the morning? The purring of Oscar.
40. The Wood Team – Andrea, Mike and Cory
The Wood was a great restaurant, bar and venue, run by really incredible people who have worked with passion and dedication to build their business to one of Fernie's most well-known locations. Andrea, Mike and Cory always offered help to charity organizations and fundraisers, offering their restaurant and services at cost and always doing the events proud. They will be missed!
