Grand Forks Facing the challenges and change Accountants wanted for Grand Forks area by WHITNEY BLACK
Often when people think of an accountant, they picture someone who lives in a big city and crunches numbers all day. Grand Forks CGA Lia Azhure knows the challenges of crunching those numbers in a smaller city like Grand Forks.
“Being in a small community makes it hard for us to attract students; they all want to be in big cities,” said Azhure. “We could always hire people and train them ourselves, but then we are faced with taking the time to train them and then having them move on to the big cities anyway.”
There are other factors in today’s society that are affecting the accounting field as well.
“The accounting association is in the process of dealing with international accounting firms to standardize the level of proficiency and rules pertaining to international accounting,” Azhure said. “It will be good when dealing with companies outside of Canada. It is just one challenge for the future.
“Of course, we are also always trying to keep up with the changing laws and tax rules too.”
