October 27 - 30 are the dates for the 2009 fifth annual Minerals South Conference and Trade Show, being held at the Cranbrook Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort and Convention Centre. This year’s event is being organized by the East Kootenay Chamber of Mines. Some of the highlights of this important regional conference are two short courses, field trips and two days of high-calibre, wide-ranging talks with a focus on southern British Columbia geology and mineral resources. These include metallic and industrial minerals as well as coal. In addition, the conference theme, “Mining and Mineral Exploration Supporting our Communities,” reflects the role that minerals play in our day-to-day lives. A free evening public lecture entitled If Mountains Could Talk: a geologist’s tour of rocks and mines, ghost towns and gold, dinosaur tracks and hot springs of the East Kootenay will be presented by Bob Turner, Geological Survey of Canada. Minerals South brings many of British Columbia and Canada’s pre-eminent geological minds to a southeast BC setting that invites and encourages learning and networking. Please join us in Cranbrook this October. The East Kootenay Chamber of Mines (EKCM) is a non-profit organization, incorporated in 1992. Our membership includes prospectors, geoscientists, resource companies, mines and mine personnel (including coal, base and precious metals and industrial minerals), suppliers, service industry and representation from the general public.
