Representing the Kootenays down under
A Nelson resident will share knowledge of strategic tools developed in the Kootenays

They're wondering how we do it here down under. Nelson’s Mike Stolte is leaving in early February 2007 for a five city tour of Australia. He will be highlighting experiences from Canadian communities, and presenting strategic tools that his organization, the Centre for Innovative and Entrepreneurial Leadership (CIEL), has developed.

The seventeen-day tour will see Stolte teamed up with Clare Wastenays, a community economic development (CED) specialist with the Government of Ontario and Peter Kenyon, an Australian who works around the world helping rural communities become more innovative and entrepreneurial.

Landing in Sydney, the trio will provide workshops in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and two rural communities as well as touring projects with innovative approaches used in many rural Australian communities.

The tour is being organized by Kenyon’s organization, the Bank of I.D.E.A.S., based in Perth, Australia.

Stolte met Kenyon at the Ontario Rural Conference last year where both men were presenting on the theme of community innovation and vitality as a necessity for 21st century rural survival. They are both scheduled to speak at the Business Retention and Expansion International (BREI) conference later this year in Regina, Saskatchewan.

“This is a good opportunity for learning on both continents,” said Stolte, who has presented CIEL’s strategic approaches to economic and community development—including the Business Vitality Initiative and the Community Vitality Initiatives—at a dozen national conferences.

CIEL, with offices in Nelson and Victoria, now employs five staff and several contractors who work throughout Canada.

Stolte is president-elect of the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation (CRRF) and sits on the steering committee of the National Rural Research Network (NRRN).
