ST. EUGENE MISSION RESORT
History and scenery
History, aboriginal culture, golf and the nightlife
come together at the beautiful St. Eugene Mission Resort
|
Sitting
on the banks of the St. Mary River bordered by the beautiful Rocky
Mountains, the St. Eugene Mission Resort is the pride of the Ktunaxa
people.
To the people of the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Tribal Council, the resort
means jobs and a legacy for their families. To visitors, it is a chance
to escape the hustle and bustle of city life without being too far
away from it all.
The history behind the resort is also intriguing to many people who
flock there every year. What was once hunting grounds for 12,000 years
for the Ktunaxa people was completely changed when many families were
placed on reserves in the late 1800s. In 1910, the St. Eugene Mission
was opened as a residential school for aboriginal children, operated
by Catholic priests and nuns.
From the 1970s to the early 1990s, the building was virtually empty
until a few key people decided to turn St. Eugene into an economic
opportunity and created the impressive St. Eugene Mission Resort.
Now in a new partnership deal with the Mnjikaning and Samson-Cree
First Nations, the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Tribal Council plans to implement
new strategies to attract even more visitors to St. Eugene Mission
Resort.
Guests who stay at St. Eugene Mission feel that they are literally
away from it all, yet they dont have to go very far. While St.
Eugene Mission is in a spectacular setting, its only 10 minutes
away from Cranbrook, five minutes from the Cranbrook airport, and
20 minutes from Kimberley.
Businesses who are looking to host a conference will also find the
resort very attractive. With St. Eugenes blend of heritage architecture
and modern, four-season accommodations, it has a lot to offer.
The resort offers 125 beautifully appointed guest rooms and suites
and 4,600 square feet of meeting and conference space, all designed
to accentuate the beauty of the heritage building and the stunning
scenery that surrounds it.
The resort also features a world-class golf course that was ranked
within the top three new golf courses in Canada by Golf Digest in
2001.
And for a little fun in the evening, visitors can take their chances
at the 19,000-square-foot Casino of the Rockies, which is operated
by Lake City Casinos in conjunction with the British Columbia Lottery
Corporation.
As well, visitors can learn about aboriginal culture and the history
of the Ktunaxa people at the interpretive centre adjacent to the main
building.
