The new pet store on the block is Kootenay Petopia, co-owned by Jan and Michelle Groshaw, which opened its doors in mid-November at 625 Columbia Avenue in Castlegar.
After just six weeks in business, Kootenay Petopia was nominated in the New Business of the Year category for the Castlegar and District Chamber of Commerce’s Business Excellence Awards.
Although the pet store didn’t win the award, Jan Groshaw said it was an honour to be nominated.
Groshaw said the store offers a complete line of pet products and pet supplies, including premium quality dog and cat foods. He said the emphasis is on natural and holistic products, including locally made dog biscuits. If you’re in the market for a dog bed or birdhouse, this is also the place to come.
As for pets themselves, Groshaw said Kootenay Petopia stocks the largest selection of tropical fish in the Kootenays.
Anyone looking for a pet of the small animal variety will find guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, hedgehogs, chinchillas and ferrets at Kootenay Petopia.
The store also sells such creatures as geckos, bearded dragons, tree frogs and tarantulas.
Kootenay Petopia further specializes in rare bird species, with a variety of canaries, finches, doves, budgies and hand-fed parrots from which to choose.
“We try to give good customer service, and have had great response,” said Groshaw.
Groshaw said he has worked in the pet industry for many years, in chain stores and at his own aviary, Birds and Beyond, in Armstrong, B.C.
He now lives in Thrums, and chose Castlegar to open a pet store for its central location.
The Groshaws also operate an organic produce farm out of their Thrums home, and are surrounded by animals including St. Bernard dogs, chickens and pheasants.
