This is a landmark year for Castlegar. The city’s municipal politicians and administrators moved into their brand new city hall in January, a project that finally got underway in 2007 after nearly two decades of discussion and planning on the building. Phil Markin, the director of development services for the City of Castlegar, is excited.
“It will help the downtown area,” he said. “We will also be building a Spirit Square in front of City Hall where the public can gather and meet, which will attract even more business for the downtown area.”
But the downtown is not the only area in Castlegar that will be seeing some significant changes this year. Next to the airport, construction on a new gaming centre is set to begin in April. The centre—which will offer gaming such as bingo and slot machines—will likely generate some profitable economic spinoffs for Castlegar.
“It will draw people looking for entertainment from the outlying areas into the community,” said Markin. “Then while they are in town, they will likely also do some shopping and otherwise support local businesses.”
The construction of new residential areas will have an impact on the city as well.
“We’ve got two fairly large residential subdivisions in process that will probably be approved in 2008,” said Markin.
One of the subdivisions, Grandview Heights, is a seniors’ housing co-op that will offer affordable housing for the growing number of retirees living in the West Kootenay.
