Fernie has released its 40 under 40 list, a comprehensive compilation of 40 citizens 40-years-old and under who are making a difference in the community.
Originally conceived by Jeff McRae, the idea quickly caught fire within Fernie. A steering committee was formed, parameters were established and over 60 nominations were received.
Together with Krista Turcasso of Fernie Fix, McRae organized a committee to choose the most suitable candidates.
“We took the 62 nominees and we compiled a four-member panel of over-40s—respected members of the community” said McRae.
McRae said that the organizing committee set down criteria early in the process.
“They can’t just be a business person,” he said. “They have to be involved in the community. They have to be doing something for the community to qualify.”
McRae said that the list—which was released on June 1st—has generated a lot of local discussion and spawned a spin off list.
“We’re looking now at a top 40 over-40,” he said. “And next January, we’ll start the nominations for the under-40 again. We hope to end up with a more distinctive list next year.”
