Fernie's Top 40 Under 40

11. Sara Funk
I am very proud to be working with the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life in the
Elk Valley again this year as the volunteer Media & Marketing Chairperson. I also work as a volunteer with the Options For Sexual Health Clinic. Both volunteer roles are very important to me; they have helped me to find great satisfaction in my life, and I have met some amazing people through both of these roles. Aside from volunteering, I am a full time parent of two wonderful children, a supportive partner, and a full time student through the College of the Rockies.

What gets me up in the morning? Literally my three-year-old daughter.

12. Lori Gadson

I've been involved with the Elk Valley Hospital Foundation since 2000 and I've spent the last three years as chairperson/president. I am also a physician involved in the options for the Sexual Health Clinic.

Fernie's mountains drew me away from Calgary in 1999. I hope that Fernie will maintain its small town charm even in the face of development, housing shortages and increased cost of living. Most importantly, I hope young families and year round Fernieites remain.

To me the comforts of small towns are trick-or-treaters, Christmas lights and recognizing people as I bike, hike and ski in the glorious outdoors!

What gets me up in the morning? Loving the fact that it's a brand new day and
possibilities abound. Literally? My alarm clock, cat and the smell of coffee.

13. The Ghostriders

The Ghostriders Organization has been an integral part of the Fernie landscape for years and continues to be a source of pride for the community. This is largely due to the involvement of the players and their devotion to helping out whenever they are called upon. The boys have always been outstanding in the community, hard working and eager to lend a hand. They act as role models to their young fans, showing them that hard work and dedication pays off. The entire team is noted as recipients of this honour.

What gets them up in the morning?
Practice.

14. Scott Gilmet

A resident of Fernie since 1997, I have been involved with the local business and tourism community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Fernie Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Kootenay Rockies, and the Fernie Trans Rockies Society. I currently work as Director of Marketing & Sales with IGS Enterprises, and am responsible for sales and marketing programs for the Park Place Lodge, Park Vacation Management, The Old Elevator Restaurant and IGS Home Hardware & Value Drugmart.

What gets me up in the morning? After nearly 10 years of living in Fernie, I think my olfactory sense have been honed enough that I can actually smell powder first thing in the morning. I am working on my ability to smell stonefly hatches!

15. Jennifer Girard

Having been in Fernie for three years, I have worked hard to make the Arts Station vibrant and colorful with my enthusiasm for the arts. I was a driving force behind the success of the Arts Station and all of its programs and concerts these last three years. I have also extended my involvement in the community to other organizations, becoming a director of the Stewardship Centre and President of the Advocates for local living.

What gets me up in the morning? My hungry cat!

16. Jenny Gutzman

Originally from Ontario, I arrived in Fernie in 1998. I am currently working for the College of the Rockies as a student recruiter - a wicked job. I love the people I work with, travel a lot, and get to tell potential students how amazing it is here and that they can get an education at the same time! I also run a bed and breakfast with my husband and we are smoking busy and loving it! I love any opportunity to promote the Elk Valley! I organize the Relay for Life Team “Snow Sisters”.

What gets me out of bed in the morning? What doesn’t?

17. Dave Hawrys
It’s hard to believe this is my 11th season in Fernie! For the last five I have had the
opportunity of Pro Patrolling at Fernie Alpine Resort. During the summer, I am an
auxiliary fire fighter for Fernie Fire Resuce. These positions allow me to do what I love most: helping people. Providing these services is always rewarding. Probably what I’ve gained even more are good friends. The people I work with have become integral to my life in Fernie. Fernie is such a beautiful town, but it is the people that keep me here.

What gets me up in the morning? My work partner Murdoch, a certified avalanche rescue dog.

18. Chris Herron

I’m a locally raised Fernie chap that did some exploring after high school in Australia. When I came back I buried my roots deep in Fernie through starting a snow removal and lawn cutting business in 2003, mixing all my best traits together: the gift of gab, leadership, human strength and the ability to be outdoors all of the time. My favorite hobbies currently would be frisbee, the gym, hacky sack, and playing on my four trampolines in the backyard.

What gets me up in the morning? Heavy, electro dance beats.

19. Denise Holden

A knee injury, copious amounts of morphine and a week in the hospital led me to Fernie for mountain medicine. It’s been ten years of the good life, gorgeous nature, great friends and projects to find my feet in. I am one of the founding members of Advocates for Local Living and am also an organizer of the Wellness Fair. Soon I will be consulting as a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. I’m often at The Cottonwood Tree where many of my interests surround me. The best part of owning this business is being part of such an amazing and supportive community.

What gets me up in the morning? Leighton Grant. Getting him ready to ride the bus is the best way to start the day.

20. Sue Hutchinson-Bawden

I strive to help make Fernie a better place to work, live, play and visit. This, combined with my personal goals, drives all that I do: Chamber and charity associations, writing articles in the Fix, sponsoring awards and sometimes ruffling feathers to create awareness. Through my business, Evolve INK Coaching & Consulting, I help inspire people to move in the direction of their dreams, find courage, connectedness and clarity to act on what is true for them. When people are grounded, so is the community.

Curiosity for life and a strong desire to make a difference gets me out of bed, but
sometimes it is all the fresh snow or birds chirping outside.
