Kris Hockley presents striking images through her photography business

Little might her forebears, fascinated with the art and alchemy of photography, have known: their print is well developed in Kris Hockley. Crow’s Nest Photography, she will tell you, is as much their creation as it is her own.

The roost that is now Hockley's home commands a sweeping view of an alluvial savannah and the Granby River, 14 kilometres north of Grand Forks. It’s also home to her partner, Grant Burnard, and children Kyra, 14, and Jack, 5. 

“I love it here,” said Hockley. “Landscape and wildlife right out my back door—imagine that!”

Perfectly well prepared for an assignment diet of weddings and other gatherings, Hockley said she is surprised at the number of shoots requested by commercial enterprises. With a background that includes stints with commercial and advertising agencies, Hockley is well prepared in this regard too.

Among those subjects that enthuse her the most, she lists sports photography—not capturing the field action, but the reactions from the sidelines and in the stands. Her website portrays a variety of images.

“I was well taught by the critical eyes of the older photography instructors at Langara College and other institutions,” she said. "They’d bring street candids to regular critiquing sessions; I’d bring pictures of babies. I like doing my own thing—and will never retire from photography.”
